The 'Building booklets' addition is a simple way of getting PageMaker to rearrange the pages of a booklet and print on paper which is to be folded. In this example we will assume that we are creating a booklet in which each page is A5, to be printed on folded A4 paper, but we could just as easily use A4 to A3.
The page setup should be for A5 paper, double sided. The document is then created as normal, with the pages in the order in which they will be read (1, 2, 3, 4, etc.). All graphics images should be imported and placed, and the Table of Contents and Index stories, (if required) should be created and placed before building the booklet.
As the operation requires a large amount of disk space, it is recommended that the files are kept on hard disk or 'Zip' drive. The vital files can be saved back to floppy later. Select 'Utilities', 'Plug-Ins' and 'Build booklet'. A dialogue box appears which must be filled in carefully:
First choose the type of booklet you want:
Depending on the type of booklet you have chosen, you may then have
to insert new pages to make the total number up to the required multiple.
You do this using the box on the left hand side. Move the arrow up or down
and click where you want to insert a blank. Then click on the 'blank page'
box.
NB: If you insert blanks anywhere other than at the end, your page
numbering may be upset.
Finally, click 'OK'. PageMaker will generate a new, untitled
publication of the required booklet (the original document is left unchanged).
The new file may be saved and edited as an ordinary document, but note
that the master pages are blank:
master page information from the original document has been copied on to
each individual page. Also notice that the page numbering of the new document
is different to the original, so that the correct pages are facing each
other when printed.
Use the document you created earlier or create a new one using guide.txt.
Using 'Page Set-up', set the page size to A5, and click on 'Double-sided' and 'Facing pages'. You should end up with a multi-page document, which you should save under a new name.
Now, using the 'Build Booklet' addition, create a booklet using '2-up saddle
stitch'. Scan the finished document to see what has happened.
