Making lists

Lists are of two main types: unordered (bulleted) and ordered (numbered).

Just so we know what we're talking about, a bulleted list looks like this:

and a numbered list looks like this:

  1. Get up
  2. Get dressed
  3. Feed the cat
  4. Have breakfast
  5. Go to work

To make a bulleted list

You can either apply bullets to an existing list, or add the bullets as you write the list. To use an existing list, the list must be in consecutive paragraphs. Just select the entire list and proceed as below. To start a new list begin on an empty new line.

Use the control panel at the top of the screen. If it is not visible, open it by selecting 'Window>Control'.

control bar

Select 'paragraph attributes' rather than 'character attributes' by clicking on the button on the left (see above).

Then apply bullets by selecting 'Apply bullets' using the button shown above (right). The default bullet style will be applied to your selection, or automatically applied to the next paragraphs you type:

To make a numbered list

The same procedure applies to making a numbered list. Apply the 'numbered list' option shown above:

Customising your list

If you want a different bulleting or numbering style to the one which appears, you can customise it by using the 'More Options' button on the Control Panel (far right). This gives you:

options

Select 'Bullets and Numbering' to open a dialogue box allowing you to choose your bulleting or numbering style.

The Bulleting box appears as:

bullet selection

Either choose a bullet type from the ones displayed, or use the 'Add' button to find another style. You can select a different font family if you wish. The small 'u' in the box indicates that the bullet will come from the font currently selected in the text of the list itself - if you change the font of the text, the bullet will change also. Otherwise the font of the bullet is completely independent.

The numbering box is:

number select

Here you can select from numbers, roman numerals in upper or lower case, or letters in upper or lower case. Against 'Number' you can also change the separator i.e. the character which appears after the number and before the list item.

As an alternative to using the Control Panel, you can open the 'Paragraph' panel ('Window>Type-and-Tables>Paragraph'). This doesn't have the 'one-click' buttons on the Control Panel, but does give you access to the Options box mentioned above.
