"To network is to be engaged with the mind-at-large, to amplify individual thought and imagination through the dynamic interaction with others in the network. In this enterprise, "others" includes artificial intelligences, sensing systems, and memory stores, as well, of course, as human beings from an enormous diversity of personal and cultural contexts."
Ref: Gesamtdatenwerk: Connectivity, Transformation and Transcendence. Roy Ascott

"Community. Our sense of belonging to social groups which often extend beyond the boundaries of specific place to include taste, consumption, shared interests and shared discursive codes. Used here to describe groups of internet users sharing a common interest connected via networked digital media."

module summary

This module takes place in semester one for full-time students and in semester four for part-time students.

In week seven students submit and present a project outline (guidelines for this are provided). Following this they begin work on the creation of a prototype digital artefact with evidence of participation from other users. Evidence of contributions to other colleagues group project work should also be submitted at the end of the module. The emphasis on participation and interaction illustrates the social aspect that contributes to a network projects' success.

The lecture series will provide a survey of technology, community, culture and art in a global context. The workshops will provide a means to express these ideas using computer software.
